Girolamo PETRIGNANI (engraver of Forlì origins active between 1635 and 1660) "The martyrdom of Saint Sebastian" Original etching in the form of an arch with the false inscription engraved "Pietro Testa inv. et fa "at the bottom center, above the dedication, received by Bartsch as proof of paternity of the work by the engraver from Lucca but already unknown since 1937 by Petrucci and brought back to Petrignani who is named at the bottom left of the engraved part . Beautiful specimen printed with rich shades of gray on a portion of laid paper bearing the filigree "Fleur de Lys in a circle with letter V", Roman paper of the 17th and 18th centuries, complete with the imprint of the plate and with small margins, in a generally perfect state of conservation, with the stamp of the Georg Denzel collection on the back. In the scene Sebastiano is tied to a large tree trunk by his persecutors while the archers are in the background, waiting to complete the martyrdom. Bibliography: Bartsch “Le Peintre-Graveur” Vienna 1820 vol.XX pag.121 n ° 17 (Pietro Testa). DeVesme “Le Peintre-Graveur italien” Milan 1906 pages 61-63 not mentioned. http://www.treccani.it/encpedia/testa-pietro-detto-il-lucchesino Measurements in mm: 373 x 217
